Dhyana Yoga — The Yoga of Meditation

श्रीभगवानुवाच। अनाश्रितः कर्मफलं कार्यं कर्म करोति यः। स संन्यासी च योगी च न निरग्निर्न चाक्रियः।

[6.1] The Lord said: Who does the karma that must be done, not leaning on the fruit of karma — he is a saṃnyāsin and a yogī, not one without the fire, and not one without action.

[6.2] What they call saṃnyāsa, know that to be yoga, O son of Pāṇḍu. For no one becomes a yogī without having cast off saṅkalpa.

[6.3] For the muni who wishes to climb to yoga, karma is said to be the means. For that same one who has climbed to yoga, śama is said to be the means.

[6.4] When he clings neither to the aims of the senses nor to karmas, a saṃnyāsin of all saṅkalpa, then he is said to have climbed to yoga.

[6.5] One should lift the ātman by the ātman, and not let the ātman sink. For the ātman alone is the friend of the ātman, and the ātman alone is the enemy of the ātman.

[6.8] One whose ātman is satisfied with jñāna and vijñāna, who stands unmoved like a peak, who has conquered the senses, is called joined — a yogī to whom a clod, a stone, and gold are the same.

mataḥ (मतः)
from man, “to think.” Is held; is thought.
